BELONIA, July 3 (TIWN): To prevent malaria in South Tripura District, an awareness camp was organized in different areas of South District on Friday. Due to the change in weather-conditions, especially with the early arrival of monsoon, residents were required to be more vigilant and with this agenda in mind the South District’s ICA Department has managed to hold an awareness camp in the district to contain the spread of malaria as well as Dengue.

As the Tribal populations do not complete the full course of drugs, malaria becomes drug resistant; and once a mosquito bites them, it can also infect others. Many malaria cases are reported even in the winter season because of this phenomenon. As the temperature soars in, several water borne diseases have hit the remote areas of the state creating panic among the tribal hamlets and others.

As May-June is the peak season for jhum cultivation, the tribals are found toiling on fields that are swarmed with mosquitoes. Moreover the tribals do not wear clothes that fully cover their bodies, and hence they are susceptible to mosquito bites.

With no lesson learned from the previous episodes here in Tripura where as many as villagers of the hilly terrain breathed their lasts effected with malaria germs, the State Left Front Government had failed to bring the epidemic down yet today. Though of course the number of patients has come down, but the outbreak still prevails in the remote villages of the state.

It seems that the state government has not learnt any lessons from the last year’s Malaria Outbreak debacles and is not bothered to spend the released amount of central fund to prepare in a better way for the next year.  All the North Eastern states usually receive huge amounts of central assistance for Health purposes but the inefficient and corrupt local management under the state health department, lead to the deplorable health status of the society.

It is to be mentioned that this campaign will continue for longer in particular places which are the most crucial areas and were highly affected with the malaria debacles in the previous year.

Dominance of Malaria comparing to previous year is low due to timely spraying of DDTs in the houses and localities, deploy of sufficient health workers comprising of ASHA workers, MPWs and others, creating awareness among the people for adopting the safety hygiene measures, to maintain cleanliness. All these measures have slightly helped in declining the debacle of malaria in the sub-division, but still in the wake of preventing the spread of the malaria and Dengue in the villages, the authority has taken the step of awareness camp.

However, the campaign will be continuing in Rishyamukh, Nalua, Ratanpur Matai, Paekhola and other several areas under Belonia sub-division.
