Toilets for women should be constructed within December 10: Chief Justice

AGARTALA, November 1 (TIWN): “Necessary steps should be taken to construct the toilets for women in different public places”- Chief Justice of High Court, Mr. Deepak Gupta had given instruction while the hearing of PIL on public sanitation for women recently.

However, Soma Das, school teacher at a school in Kamalpur Sub Division wrote a letter to Deepak Gupta on July 14, 2014 highlighting the worst situations faced by women who come to the city for different works due to lack of female toilets. In the letter, she also mentioned such a situation faced by her during her visit to Radhanagar where she had to pay money for using a toilet. After 10 days of filing, the Chief Justice at last accepted the PIL on July 24th.

In conncetion with the case, Mr.Gupta directed the chief secretary of the state, G. Kameshwar Rao, to submit the government’s plan of action for solving the problem to the high court latest by December 10. The Agartala Municipal Corporation authority said there was lack of space in the capital for building new toilets, and the state government advocate backed the argument. The judges expressed dissatisfaction over the replies, saying they were not acceptable, as so many new buildings were coming up in the state capital.

It is mentioned that a division bench comprising of Deepak Gupta and Justice UB Saha also asked him to consult with Tripura Government and Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) authority and other officials concerning the issue. In the hearing, the AMC explained that the present figure of toilets in the city is very less than required due to lack of open space under the jurisdiction of AMC. The next date of hearing is scheduled onDecember 10th.

On the other hand, focusing on the lack of toilets especially for girls in at least 352 schools throughout the state, The Central Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD) has undertaken aproject- Swachhya Vidyalaya, Swachhya Bharat and as many as 10,000 schools in the entire country was placed on target under the project. According to the report of MHRD, there are a total of 523 schools under Sepahijala district and out of the total; 121schools for girls do not have toilets. Though, 14 schools have toilet, but not viable to use.

The number of schools in Khowai district stands at 467 out of which, 69 schools lacks in toilet facilities for girl students. Others are not viable to use. Similarly, around 10 schools under Dhalai district, 9 schools under Gomati district, 40 schools of North Tripura district, 4 schools of South Tripura district, 50 schools in Unakoti district and 49 schools under West Tripura district do not have toilet for girls. It is worthy to mention here that the highest number of schools  having toilets to use is at Unakoti and North Tripura.
